The Checkerboard Squares began in 1960. Now, nearly 50 years later, this active club hosts two dances a month, enjoys an annual fall beach weekend getaway, takes a yearly club mystery trip, participates in a summer picnic, holds a Christmas party, engages in numerous visitations to other clubs and sponsors dance classes. We love to square dance, and we like to share that with others.
- Some of the public venues where we have square danced include…
- The Oregon State Fair in Salem, Ore.
- The Starlight parade in downtown Portland
- An arts festival in downtown Gresham, Ore.
- The Teddy Bear parade in downtown Gresham, Ore.
- Gateway Parade–where the club won first place for best commercial float
We dance the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at the Rockwood Grange in Gresham, Ore. Round dancing starts at 7:30 p.m.; squares begin at 8 p.m.; the potluck dinner serves up at 10 p.m. Admission: $5 for non-members.
