Magazine for Square Dancers is Worth the Price

News Flash:

  • The Bachelor Beauts, a Central Oregon club, just graduated 30 new dancers. (Congratulations!)
  • The Sweet Home Squarenaders will participate in the Brownsville Pioneer Picnic Parade and host a free dance in the park this summer. (Sounds like fun!)
  • The Whirl-a-ways of Springfield, Ore, just raised $403 at their April 24 dance to help caller Jim Steele.  (Good job!)
  • The Klamath Country Squares will present a dance demo at a farmers market in August in lieu of a regular dance. (Great idea.)
  • Woodburn’s Golden Squares recently welcomed a bus load of square dancers from Seattle (45 in all), resulting in 23 squares on their floor. Some Seattle dancers had heard the Crew and wanted to attend the next dance where they would be calling. The Golden Squares club was the callers’ next venue. (Amazing story!)
  • The Independence Wagon Wheelers from Rickreall collected 100 pounds of food at their April dances for a food bank. (Great!)
  • The Lebanon Square Circlers are designing a parade float with a stone age theme. (That’s a creative theme!)
  • The Salem Swingin’ Stars danced a demo during Ag Fest at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. (Fun!)
  • The Valley River Dancers will dance outdoors on tennis courts near their hall on July 23. (Sounds like a novel idea!)
  • The Chaps and Petticoats of Aurora will host a food booth serving elephant ears and Italian sodas at the Hubbard Hop Festival on July 17. (Yum! What a delicious idea for a fundraiser.)
  • The Happy Hoppers enjoyed 22 squares at its 51st anniversary dance. (That’s a terrific turnout!)
  • The Happy Rock’rs club is folding. The last dance is Sept. 25, a luau. Most members plan to join the Oaky Doaks. (Sad to see another club go.)
  • The Oaky Doaks held a free dance on June 17 with donations accepted for the American Cancer Society. (Nice.)
  • Charlie Brown Squares of Grant Pass had two floats in the Merlin parade. The square dancing float won first place for floats. (Congrats!)
  • The Coast Swingers of Garibaldi sponsored a rummage sale April 30. (Wish I’d been there!)
  • Terry Halley is the new club caller for the Tri-Squares of Tigard. (Best wishes, Terry!)
  • Les Seeley is redoing his lawn. (Sorry to hear about your troubles.)

So how do I know all this great stuff? I read about it in the Oregon Federation News (OFN), your official state square dance magazine. Dance themes and times, club news, advertising, color photos, information, opinion…it’s all there. You don’t have to search a jillion Web sites to find information. What you need is staring at you, there on your coffee table. I hope you’re a subscriber.

Two OFN subscription dances are coming up in July: July 31 at the Hahn Barn (503) 645-0811 and at the Salem Square Dance Center (503) 588-0962. If you’re not  a subscriber, these might be fun events to attend and then sign up for a year. Vivian Fairburn, the hard-working OFN editor, will be happy to hear from you. She does a good job for our clubs.
