After-Party at 2010 Summer Square Dance Festival Offers Fun For All

I attended my first after-party this summer at the national convention in Louisville. I danced in a room containing about eight squares. Onlookers lined the walls. This weekend, at the Pendleton summer festival, I’ll have an opportunity to attend my second after-party. This one promises to be a winner from all I’ve heard. The PAC will be sponsoring this hour of non-stop dancing to the Fiddlegrass bluegrass band and the calling of Les Seeley, Daryl Clendenin and callers from the floor. The festivities begin at 10 p.m. Saturday night.

The 2011 festival quilt was designed and pieced by Dixie Read, a member of the Checkerboards, and the embroidery was done by Keith Miles, a Happy Rock'r club member.

Les Seeley is a high-energy, experienced caller who has called for the River City Dancers, Portland’s largest club, since the club’s inception in 1990. He started calling in 1987. Les is well-loved for his jokes, deep husky voice and ability to keep a dance lively.┬áDaryl Clendenin, another experienced caller, teaches a caller’s school and is known for making dances interesting.

At the after-party, dancers will have an opportunity to meet the 2011 summer festival committee. Friday night, the committee women will be wearing their 2011 outfits (black fabric with pink roses–the PAC colors), which some dancers (me) are still frantically trying to finish. (I think another two hours and my outfit will be done. I don’t want to be sewing on the drive to Pendleton!) You may see some official outfits at the after-party, too.

If 100 people in Pendleton sign up for the 2011 summer festival, their names will be entered in a drawing at the after-party to win a free ribbon to attend the 2011 festival.

This artwork appears on the summer festival T-shirts.

A  blue square dance quilt will be on display. The quilt is a fundraiser for the 2011 summer festival.Raffle tickets for the quilt will cost $1 each or three for $2. Raffle tickets for a riverboat dinner trip up the Columbia river will be for sale ($1 for one ticket; $2 for three tickets). Also for sale will be 2011 summer festival T-shirts in pink and gray ($10). They are classy!

The raffle tickets and T-shirts will be available at the registration table. So bring a few extra bucks to buy some goodies in Pendleton. You can’t win the raffle if you don’t buy a ticket!
