Checkerboard Squares’ 50th Draws Crowd

A big thank you to everyone who celebrated with the Checkerboard Squares on Nov. 13. We had a blast. Between 91 and 100 guests crowded the Rockwood Grange, dancing to Randy Dibble’s calling and Jeanine Norden’s cuing. At 9 p.m., dancing paused for the 2011 summer festival ribbon drawing and acknowledgement of past members who were visiting.

An open break at 9:30 p.m. featured two sheet cakes, punch and two tables of “finger food”–lil’ smokies, salmon open-faced sandwiches, sliced wraps, deviled eggs, hot Mexican dip and chips…and much more.

Golden anniversary decorations added to the festivities–golden bells hung above the stage, gold tables cloths spread across the tables and candles flickered on each table.

Photo albums spread across a table told the story of the Checkerboards over the years, highlighting special events and special people.

Today’s Checkerboard members probably won’t be around to celebrate a 75th or 100th anniversary. But imagining a new generation of dancers celebrating the continuation of the Checkerboard Squares is a happy thought.
