New Square Dancers Graduate From Checkerboard Squares Class

New dancers and angels tried to dance without losing their balloons.

Graduation night in early January brought smiles and laughter as new dancers and angels practiced their moves with balloons squished between their knees or with one foot in a paper grocery bag.

Angels and new dancers alike broke out square dance attire for graduation.

During the break, class coordinator Wanda and caller Terry Halley produced a quiz for everyone to take. The quiz required dancers to decipher the names of square dance moves from cartoon drawings that spelled out the various parts of the call. Even experienced dancers felt challenged.

Dancing with a bag is easier than dancing with a balloon between the knees.

Club class coordinator Wanda passed out diplomas to the new dancers–a few were absent, unfortunately. She also had made certificates of appreciation for the angels from other clubs who had assisted with lessons. One mentioned that this was the first time he had ever received such a document.

Helen made a celebration cake–spice, I believe it was–with cream cheese frosting. Yum! (Checkerboards are known for their cooking.)

At the end of the graduation, the new students voted to continue classes for a few more weeks; they wanted to review before the Mid-Winter festival in Albany. Many of the new dancers have already signed up.

What fun to share an activity with others and see them grow to like it just as much as you do!

Angels from other clubs received certificates of thanks while new club members look on.
